Lithium batteries cannot normally be charged below freezing (32°F). Our VHC™ (Vertical Heat Conduction) system uses internal heating films to warm the battery cells. When you apply a charge source (solar or shore power) in freezing conditions, the battery automatically diverts that energy to the heaters first. Once the internal temp reaches a safe level, it automatically switches to charging the battery.
No, the battery functions perfectly as a standalone unit. However, the free Expion360 SmartTalk™ App (iOS and Android) unlocks valuable data. It lets you see exactly how much runtime you have left, check the internal temperature, and verify if the heating element is active—giving you total peace of mind without installing a physical monitor on your wall.
No. The intelligent BMS (Battery Management System) is designed to run the heaters primarily from the incoming charge source (like your solar panels or converter), not the battery's stored energy. This ensures you don't wake up to a dead battery just because the heater was running.
Currently, the SmartTalk™ & Heated features are available on our Group 27 (100Ah & 132Ah), GC2 (162Ah & 48V), and EX2 Edge (240Ah & 48V) models.

UL 1973 is one of the most rigorous safety standards for energy storage systems. Achieving this compliance means our battery packs have passed extensive testing for resistance to abuse—including overcharging, short-circuiting, and fire exposure. While UL 1973 covers the entire battery pack, UL 1642 focuses specifically on the individual lithium cells inside. Using UL 1642 recognized cells ensures that the foundational building blocks of our batteries have been independently tested for stability and safety.
